How to determine whether the IP you are using is exclusive or shared?

On the Internet, we often hear the concepts of exclusive IP and shared IP. Exclusive IP means that an IP address is only used by one user or one website, while shared IP means that multiple users or multiple websites share an IP address. So, how to tell whether an IP is exclusive? Next, we will look at it from several aspects.

How to determine whether the IP you are using is exclusive or shared?

Before that, let's first understand what exclusive IP and shared IP are.

A dedicated IP address is an IP address that is only assigned to one user or one website, while a shared IP address is shared by multiple users or websites. Because a dedicated IP address is only used by one user or website, it usually has higher security and stability, and can effectively avoid the impact of malicious attacks or abuse by other users or websites. However, a shared IP address may have security and stability risks, because different users or websites share an IP address, which may cause the IP address to be affected by the behavior of other users or websites.

Now that we know the definition of exclusive IP, let’s talk about how to distinguish them.

1. The easiest way to query WHOIS is probably to query WHOIS. WHOIS is a query tool that can determine whether an IP address is exclusive or shared by querying its information. If the WHOIS query result shows that the IP address is registered under a single organization, then it is likely that this is an exclusive IP. If the WHOIS query result shows that the IP address is registered under multiple organizations, then it is likely that this is a shared IP.

2. Ping test
Ping test is a method to test the quality of network connection. The Ping command is as follows:

ping IP address -t -l 1
The -t parameter indicates continuous ping, and -l 1 indicates that the size of the sent ping packet is 1 byte. Since each router will reduce the TTL by 1, if we receive a "TTL timeout" error message, it means that the IP address has passed through at least one router, that is, the IP address is not exclusive.

If we keep pinging this IP address and do not receive a "TTL timed out" error message, then this IP address is exclusive.

It should be noted that although using the Ping command to test whether an IP address is exclusive can provide some reference information, it is not a 100% accurate method. Because some firewalls will filter Ping packets, if an IP address does not respond to Ping packets, it cannot be determined that it is exclusive. Therefore, when testing whether an IP address is exclusive, other factors need to be considered.

3. The price is correct. The simplest and most direct way is that the price of a dedicated IP is higher than that of a shared IP.

Of course, there are other tools/websites that can also test whether an IP is exclusive, but the specific details still need to be considered from multiple aspects.
